Art and philosophy

Art and philsophy are linked like Lacan’s ‘Master and Hysteric’- The art is presented to us, the truth lies within the art, philopsophy speaks of that truth?! The art cannot be the art within the audience percieving it?

Didactic schema- ‘Its thesis  is that art is incapable of truth, or that all truth is external to art’ (p.2)….The art itself does only comment of explore it does not tell a truth. The truth may lie in the artist who produced the work or the reader of the art.

How art work effects others is at the essence of art? whether that be the artist producing the work or the others that view it.

Romantic Schema- ‘Its thesis is that art alone is capable of truth’ (p.3). A eductaional viewpoint. The art contains knowledge- the knowledge is a truth.

‘ART IS THE ABSOLUTE AS SUBJECT’ -Philosophy the Father- art the son- CARNATION.

Classical Schema- Aristotle

‘Art- as the didactic schema argues- is incapable of truth. Its essence is mimetic, and its regime is semblance.’

‘This incapacity does not pose a serious problem (contrary to what Plato believed) This is because the purpose (destination) of art  is not in the least truth. Of course art is not truth, but it also does not claim to be truth and is therefore innocent.’ (p.4)

‘In Lacan and Freud, art is concieved as what makes it so that the object of desire’ (p.7)

Does this come back to the Triangle of Symbolic, Imaginary and Real.

Is the art an opinion? The truth comes in the self?

How to read Lacan- Chapter 7

THE PERVERSE SUBJECT OF POLITICS:LACAN AS A READER OF MOHAMMAD BOUYERI

A point that stood out to me in the chapter is how when a person acts out an evil act they make themselves become object also- pointing out how horrible they are feeling “feel sorry for me”. This is evident in Tues 22nd espisode of Hollyoaks http://www.channel4.com/programmes/hollyoaks/4od 

‘What horrible things I had to watch in the pursuance of my duties, how heavily the task weighed upon my shoulders’ (p.106) The other point that was made, which stood out, was that one can not be blamed/ feel guilt for their actions if they are following the Big Other. The morals they furfil within their act are respectful to the Big Other. Reasons for so many terroist acttacks? The 911 attacks for example….all the people that crashed the planes and killed so many lives would have no guilt and would have done it to follow their leader-the big other- to prove they believe-that they tell of the truth and for that reason they will sacrafice their life and die. ‘Truth from lie is death, the truthful subject’s readiness and wish to die’ (p.110) ‘Perversion, at its most fundamental, resides in the formal structure of how the pervert relates to the truth and speech. The pervert claims direct access to some figure of the big Other (from God or history to the desire of his partner), so that, dispelling all the ambiguity of language, he is able to act directly as the instrument of the big Others will’ (p.116)

‘Appearance similarily overlaps with truth in one’s ideological self-perception’ Throughout reading this book I have been questioning that by adopting anothers act can you actually become this. I think what Lacan suggests is that by believeing in the Big Other- whatever that may be, one can become anything. As long as I believe I am a muslim I am one.

‘in the silence you don’t know, you must go on, I can’t go on, I’ll go on’ (p.20)

Silence and stillness is the withdrawal from the Big Other- the symbolic order and the social constructions. If we really want to know ourselves we should best explore in stillness and silence?

How to read Lacan- Chapter 6

GOD IS DEAD BUT HE DOESN’T KNOW IT: LACAB PLAYS WITH BOBOK

This Chapter revolves around the statement ‘If God does not exist then everything is permitted.’ At first this statement suggests that without God the at most Big Other than there will be no rules or morals, therefore one can act in any way of their choosing.

‘today we have, on the contrary, a subject who presents himself as tolerant hedonist dedicated to the pursuit of happiness, and whose unconscious is the site of the prohibitions: what is repressed is not illicit desires or pleasures, but prohibitions themselves’ (p.92)

The Id (as Freud termed) the “law of desires” or prohibitions will take control of a persons act. The superego- the fight of morals will be inactive?

A predicament is made on p.92: ‘If God exists, then everything is permitted’, we are to believe that our acts are predetermined, that God has a plan for all of us, so surely we should act upon our impulese, as these impulses are also part of God’s “plan”.

Even with “everything permitted” we always act with a “hidden” superego. Zizek elborates on how statements are presented with us with an expectation to act upon on Morals. The freedom of live is restrained from us as we act upon morals and the symbolic order through the superego. ‘You know how much your grandmother loves you! But, nonetheless, I do not want to force you to visit her-go there only is you really want to’ (p.92)

Zizek also explores what Lacan termed the ‘Others knowledge’. ‘Commodity fetishism (our belief that commodities are magical objects, endowed with an inherent metaphysical power) is not located in our mind, in the way we (mis)percieve reality, but in our social reality itself’ (p.94). The morals, social constructions and symbolic order are unconscious knowings which we construct our life through God-The Big Other.

Later on in the Chapter experiencing/noticing an Others desire is explored. Zizek suggests that recognising ones desires in a Real real.

‘With regard to woman as an object of disturbance, the more she is covered, the more our (male) attention focuses on her and on what lies beneath the veil’. The less exposed a female is the more of a desire they become. (Voyeurism, Male gaze). The enjoyment happens in the fantasy/desire not the act itself.

How ro read Lacan- Chapter 5

EGO IDEAL AND SUPEREGO: LACAN AS A VIEWER OF CASABLANCA

This Chapter explores the concept of the superego and how it effects us in the everyday. Freud termed superego as an aspect of ones personality that acts upon desires and the internalized ideal. When speaking of Lacan’s theories Zizek suggests that the superego attempts to make the ego act morally not realistically.

‘ideal ego is imaginary, what Lacan calls the “small other”, the idealised mirror-image of my ego; Ego-Ideal is symbolic, the point of my symbolic identification, the point in the Big other from which I observe (and judge) myself; Superego is real, the cruel andinsatiable agency which bombards me with impossible demands and then mocks my botched attempt to me them.’ (p.80)

Lacan termed a fourth ‘the law of desire’.  The superego fights for our desiresThe feelings we feel through recognising or acting on our desires is Real.

Is the Superego the exposure of our desires? In life is the superego hidden behind the symbolic order. Behind symbolic meanings is there a diverse intention, carried through the superego? Superego stops us from acting on desires, but from noticing them the superego enables us to experience a Real feeling.
